Pierce Hurdle Tips

Here's our Pierce Hurdle Tips

NEWMILL – Better known as chaser but the 2006 Queen Mother winner boasts a decent record over jumps at best but last win was when landing Red Mill Hurdle over Macs Joy in 2007. Plenty on plate off top weight and has not shown much sparkle of late.

KIRBYBROGUELANTERN – Hat trick winner in bumpers and the same over hurdles with last success over 2m 4f when giving Made In Taipan (gave 23lbs) a 12L beating last October. Would be suited by further and recent form needs improvement.

VITAL PLOT (USA) – Flat scorer and hat trick hurdle winner over distance and ran fine race to finish within 7L of Hurricane Fly in Grade 1 Royal Bond latest. Progressive sort who is usually blinkered but high enough in handicap.

ON THE WAY OUT – Progressive novice. Won bumper and has stepped up to narrowly Judge Roy Bean in maiden and stayed on strongly in taking Gowran hurdle latest. Stays well and acts on ground but may a few too good here.

SILVER JARO – Finished third to Barker in last years renewal and sprang big surprise when accounting for Psycho in County hurdle subsequently. Dual flat winner in France and hurdle scorer for Johnjoe O’Neill he is now 12lbs than last year higher but cannot be left out of calculations.

WANANGO (GER) – Lightly raced but decent hurdler/chaser who boasts a fine win ratio in both codes (5 out of 15. Three time winner over hurdles and is reverting to minor obstacles following heavy last fence fall (held in second ) in Hilly Way chase on latest. Not entirely dismissed but does face a fairly tough task.

PSYCHO – Lightly raced ex pointer who showed decent form over minimum trip over hurdles, landing a brace and looked unlucky in defeat over course/distance (fell last) last February and when given plenty to do when failing by 3/4L to Silver Jaro in County Hurdle. Suited by trip/course/ground and could prove best of strong stable representation.

SESENTA – The decent dual flat victor (rated 85) sprang surprise when beating better fancied stablemate to land her maiden hurdle and also took competitive Listowel handicap off fairly high weight. Tidy sort who looks stable third string.

QUARTINO (GB)– Flat winner for John Gosden and the three time hurdle winner landed a competitive handicap hurdle by over length from Sanglote (rec 2lbs) in Listowel last September. Tried over fences last time but suspicion better ground would suit better and not obviously well treated.

DANCING TORNADO – Looked useful when landing brace of Cork bumpers before joining present yard. Did score in 2m 4f maiden hurdle but was proving exasperating before first time cheekpieces provided overdue win latest over course/distance. Better ground would aid and arguably high enough in handicap.

DEUTSCHLAND (USA) – Former Michael Jarvis flat winner and has proved useful for present stable, landing a couple of hurdles and finished a fair seventh in last years renewal. Now 7lbs lower but has to overcome a couple of falls over fences lately (looked likely winner in both) and looks stable main hope.

SPLURGE – Had a ‘purple patch’ during a four month stint in late 2007 and earlier last year and landed four soft ground handicap hurdles up to 2m 1f, including over Victram at levels in Limerick and went up 43lbs in process. Indicated a return to form on latest when fair third to Dancing Tornado (levels) and each way prospects.

SIEGE OF ENNIS – Flat maiden after 19 tries and just one win over hurdles – maiden over course/distance a year ago. Experienced type who has shown promise in defeat but looks held on staying effort behind Imperial Hill last time. Others preferred.

TIGER CRY – Dual hurdle and chase winning veteran who returned to winning ways after some two and a half years when landing the Grand Annual chase from My Petra (rec 2lbs) last March. Needs to step up on recent form to take a hand.

CARTHALAWN – Consistent hurdler/chaser who has been successful twice in each of those codes in addition to a bumper during a busy career. Rated 22lbs higher over fences but often finds less than anticipated and though snug Cork victory on penultimate start show him in good heart others preferred.

ROBIN DU BOIS – French hurdle winner who opened Irish account at ninth attempt when landing Cork hurdle latest. Keen sort who will be suited by ground off light weight from yard that excels in landing big pots. Obvious chance.

IMPERIAL HILLS – Flat winner on good ground and finally confirmed promise over hurdles by landing double within last couple of months and only 1lb higher for 2L defeat of Fen Game (gave 14lbs) over course/distance latest. Progressive sort from stable in form but 13lb penalty will make life more difficult.

SANGLOTE (FR) – Struck to win Limerick bumper on debut but failed to follow up in that sphere and proved consistent but somewhat disappointing over hurdles before first time blinkers proved the ticket on return to Limerick latest. Could be open to improvement but faces tough enough task at weights.

ALPINE EAGLE – Dual flat winner and has shown decent level of form in efforts over hurdles, scoring well in Thurles and just touched off by another progressive sort in Quiscover Fontaine in Limerick last time. Tends to pull hard but claims off low weight nevertheless.

SOPHOCLES (GB) – Runner up to Cork All Star in Cheltenham bumper in 2007 and scored only success over jumps over course/trip on second start. Did run out easy winner on flat (over 1m 6f) in Galway on last success and though nothing over jumps on recent efforts cannot be entirely dismissed in first time blinkers.

FEN GAME – Ex John Gosden. Flat winner and dual hurdle scorer who went down by 2L to Imperial Hills over course/distance last time. Obvious chance of turning tables on 17lbs better terms but suspicion suited by better ground.

MULLACH NA SLI (GB) – Just modest on flat (0 from 6) but did land Cork maiden hurdle on second start over hurdles without looking straightforward. Fair efforts in handicap company in interim but looks stable outsider.

RIGHT OR WRONG – Flat winner as 2yo and scored only success over hurdles when beating Beau Michel in 3yo Fairyhouse maiden in 2007. Not disgraced in interim but looks to have something to find. Has raced in blinkers of late.

KRONOS (GER) – Dual flat winner up to 1m 3 1/2f in his native Germany during 2007 and though he registered on debut in Down Royal maiden hurdle for new connections looks to out of depth here.

SUPERIOR BEN – Maiden who showed ability over course in couple of bumpers and has run well in defeat on a few occasions in fair maiden hurdles recently. Off light weight but not one of the more obvious contenders.

MULLICAGH LASS – Did score easy success in Sligo maiden hurdle on fourth attempt in that sphere and though she has subsequently added a Tralee handicap to her tally and will appreciate ground she could find this a ‘bridge too far’.

MURTAGH – Twice placed on flat (rated 72) but better over minor obstacles and made all and jumped soundly to beat Dani California (rec 5lbs) on hurdle bow in Navan during 2007 on yielding. Relatively lightly raced in interim and mainly ordinary form on easier ground. Difficult to enthuse about prospects.

TURTLE TIME LUCKY – Displayed promise in bumpers without succeeding and though narrow winner of maiden hurdle has shown a fair degree of ability in the interim and was in contention when exiting two out behind Imperial Hills latest and gets pull of 17lbs from winner. Placed prospects at least.

LAKIL HOUSE – Lightly raced 9yo. The bumper victor on soft scored only success over jumps in comfortable fashion on fast ground in Killarney over 2m 1f during 2006. Signalled a return to form on latest couple of starts when fitted with cheekpieces, failing to Carthalawn (gave 6lbs) and Imperial Hills (USA) (rec 3lbs) with front running employed. Outside prospects only.

PENNY’S BILL – Bumper/hurdle winner up to 2m 2f on varying grounds in 2007 and has not been disgraced in interim but this looks a big ask, even off a low weight.

As usual a fiercely competitive Pierce hc hurdle with all the big yards, including Willie Mullins (4), Tony Martin (2) and Jessica Harrington (3) and in addition Tom Hogan (2) represented. Tony Martin looks to have major prospects with Robin Du Bois and Psycho with the latter fancied to do best of the pair while Mullins best chances lie with the hat trick seeking Imperial Hills and Deutschland who has been strutting his stuff over fences of late. Tom Hogan’s Silver Jaro was third in the race last year and will have his supporters while Sophocles could be seen to better effect in first time blinkers. Others to consider are Splurge and Sanglote. PSYCHO is just selected to see off Deutschland with Sophocles and Silver Jaro filling the minor placings.
