South Africa v Uruguay Tips

Chris Carter - 16 Jun 2010

Bafana Bafana nearly won against Mexico - can they raise the spirits of Africa once again with a bright performance?

Both teams employed similar tactics in their opening match of the World Cup, something which yielded a valuable point. South Africa could have had all three but will be reasonably satisfied to have drawn with a vibrant Mexican team, while La Celeste managed to hold on against France.

Indeed, it's Uruguay who are slight favourites to win this match at Loftus Versfeld. Bet365 offer 7/5 that Oscar Tabarez's team take all three points and the south American side are likely to be more adventurous than they were against the French.

While Diego Forlan (11/2 Boylesports) had a couple of decent chances on Friday evening, strike partner Luis Suarez simply succeeded in getting himself into offside positions. Nevertheless, the Ajax striker did score 35 goals in 33 Dutch league games last season and he's 13/2 (Ladbrokes) to show his worth by breaking the deadlock.

South Africa employed a near-perfect gameplan against Mexico, soaking up opposition pressure before hitting their opponents on the counter-attack. Carlos Alberto Parreira will be looking for his team to be more solid defensively if they do take the lead once again and you can get 9/4 (William Hill) that the nation goes crazy by witnessing the hosts claim their first victory.

Kaltego Mphela is likely to be deployed as a lone striker once again, although Siphiwe Tshabalala was the goalscoring hero and the Kaiser Chiefs midfielder is 10/1 (Blue Square) to open the scoring for the second match running.

If either team are to qualify for the last sixteen stage, this is a match that cannot be lost and perhaps the smart money should be on the draw (23/10 totesport). A cagey approach to the game from both teams is expected and that's reflected in the Under 2.5 Goals price (8/15 Bet Fred).

Perhaps it's worth siding with Uruguay, who clearly have the firepower to cause South Africa a few problems, especially as the hosts' marking was suspect in the first half. The visitors are 6/1 (Sky Bet) to win by a 1-0 scoreline.
